RHAIN

There was a moment, with my hand wrapped around the back of her head, my fingers threaded through her hair and my eyes locked to hers, that I briefly questioned what it was I was trying so desperately to return to back home.

She was warm and soft. Her skin heated mine as my lips pressed to her head. She smelled like snowy pine and buttery bread and I felt something impossible slip down my spine as I willed her burns to heal through my touch. Something absolutely impossible. Something like my power returning, refilling.

She lifted her arms to inspect her skin before blinking up at me with those achingly soft velvet brown eyes, and I felt something even more impossible. My heart quickening, my breath catching.

Then the cat spoke, and she slipped away from me and it took every ounce of my willpower not to collapse in a confused puddle of longing on the floor.

They were distracted from my untethered state by their bickering and when they finally fell silent, I risked a look up at Audrey. Sure she would be staring back at me, sure she could read my thoughts, sure she had sensed my weakness. Instead, I was met with her closed eyes and lips pressed tightly together. She was taking deep breaths, like she was attempting to calm herself. Considering my current inability to speak, this time she was surely irritated with the furry creature and not me.

There is something about her irritation that moves me. I feel like a child who misbehaves for an adult’s attention. Regardless of how she looks at me, I craved those soft brown eyes focusing on me.

With a slow exhale, she pressed her palms to her thighs and leaned forward, preparing to stand. I reached out and rested a palm gently on her knee. Her eyes met mine. I felt that spine tingling again and knew I had to get away from her. Now. Or she would start to suspect something odd about me. I still had no idea what exactly was going on, but I needed some space to sort it out.

“You need to rest,” I said. My voice came from my lips more forcefully than I intended it to. She narrowed her eyes.

“You’ve healed me, oh magical one,” she said, holding up her arm where only a light pink mark gave evidence of the burns that had puckered the skin only minutes ago. “And I need to clean up in the kitchen. The leftover food will spoil if it’s left out much longer.”

“You rest. I’ll clean it up,” I insisted, holding out a hand to indicate she should lie down on the sofa.

Her head falls to the side, her narrowed gaze watching me with bare skepticism. She doesn’t trust me. Still. I could hardly blame her.

“You’re going to… clean up the kitchen. Even though you are no longer contractually obligated to do so?”

“You made the meal. I owe you.”

She didn’t look entirely convinced, but her eyes were heavy. I could see the fatigue behind them.
